A peek at...

...my green shelf!

You asked for it, you got it. Well, part of it.  This past weekend, when Jo's guest post about tbr organization debuted, I mentioned that my bookshelves are organized by color. Allow me to explain: I've gone through many organizational systems, but this is the one that stuck.  I have a habit of pulling out many books at a time when I am trying to decide what to read next, and then something else ends up taking those spots, which makes alphabetical and genre organizing futile.  And I have so many books that they tend to look messy, so I figured, if they were blocks of color, it would be a design element, and look a bit less messy.
That idea seemed to intrigue a lot of you, and you asked for a peak at my shelves.  I decided to oblige, in bits and pieces, with peeks at my shelves, starting with my favorite color - green*.
Here, for your viewing pleasure, are my green shelves:

As you can see, these books are green (or mostly** green).  These shelves comprise most of green books.  There are some that do not reside on the green shelves, but you'll hear about that another day.
Note, Jo's post was about books that have yet to be read; some of these books I have read, this is just merely my organizational system.  I don't segregate the old and the new, they are allowed to co-mingle.

Some of my favorite green book covers:
Skin by Roald Dahl
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley
Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez
Arthur and George
Under the Lilacs
The Waste Land
Mr Muo's Traveling Couch (not pictured)

Green books not pictured:
Mr. Muo's Traveling Couch (resides on my favorite spines shelf, coming soon to a blog post near you)
I, Coriander (ditto)
The Goose Girl (^)
The Year of the Flood (do I really need to repeat myself?)
Skulduggery Pleasant (was otherwise occupied)
The Princess Bride (see Mr. Muo)
Frankenduck (not a book, but a rubber ducky.  He was engaged at the time of the photo shoot)
Basajaun (on signed shelf, coming soon)
Highlander's Temptation (how did I end up with two copies of this?  Anyway, it's off being lascivious in a corner somewhere.)

And yes, peeking out from below the green shelves is a super Nintendo system (old school, baby!) and season one of Arrested Development.  Good times.

*Honestly, though green is indeed my favorite color, I chose to start with green because I was wearing green eye shadow.  It seemed meant to be.
**I categorize my books by the colors I think of them, which may not be the predominate color on the spine.  More examples of this to come.

  1. that is quite a pretty shelf, I love creative ways of organizing things (I love organizing things in general lol)
I sadly do not actually own any shelves at the moment and my books are sitting in piles on my desk and in boxes =(

  2. It's interesting to see just how pervasive digital memory has become in our everyday lives. It's like everywhere I turn, I see something with a card slot or USB jack, lol. I guess it makes sense though, considering how much cheaper memory has become lately...

    Ahhh, I shouldn't be complaining. I can't get by a single day without using my R4 / R4i!

  3. Great shelf, Misty! That's so cool! I think if I was to do coloured shelves, I'd have about 3-4 shelves of black books, and the rest all multicoloured, as I don't have many other colours, and not enough shelves to warrant just putting 3 or 4 books on one shelf. Alphabetical order works for me :) But I do love shelving by colour! Very pretty!

  4. LOL, when I featured you last Friday, several people commented on the Blue shelf. They were wondering how many shelves there were.

  5. During college, my bookshelves were organized by where things took place for some reason. Now I'm just back to alphabetical by author. Me and the hubby have been rewatching Arrested Development....again! This is our third time rewatching it since the show aired. :)

  6. Interesting system. I wouldn't have thought of that. Make for prettier shelves - like a rainbow!

  9. I love the idea of organising your shelves by colour. My books always just end up squished on the shelves at random or in piles (I have piles on the sofa, piles on the floor, piles in the bedroom - piles of books everywhere LOL)

I really need to get more shelving & then I really need to do some major organising :o)

  10. Practical and pretty!
My shelves are organized (loosely) by genre. I don't think I have enough books to sort by color, but it's a great system!
