Snippet: Pride and Prejudice, from Liz

Liz reviewed (ie, gushed) about P&P earlier this month, and I wanted to share something with you that I especially found interesting.  Liz says:
"Last time I read this book my family and I discussed it over dinner and my mom mentioned that one of her favorite quotes from the novel is actually something which Lady Catherine De Bourgh says.

"Of music! Then pray speak aloud. It is of all subjects my delight. I must have my share in the conversation if you are speaking of music. There are few people in England, I suppose, who have more true enjoyment of music than myself, or a better natural taste. If I had ever learnt, I should have been a great proficient."

My brother quickly followed this comment with, "Someone should drop a piano forte on Lady Cahterine de Bourgh's head!""

I absolutely love the idea of families discussing books over dinner (or anytime), but to have an entire family discussing Jane Austen over dinner makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.  Bonus points for Liz's family!

  3. With all of the new attention that this and other Victorian novels are receiving in the media and through re-imaginings like Seth Grahame-Smith's P&P&Zombies, I'm waiting for someone to take on retelling some of these stories through the eyes of minor characters - I would love to see on from the point of view of one of the house servants or summat.

Great blog, by the way. I've enjoyed your month O' Jane.

  4. Great excerpt. I had the same feelings as your brother when Mrs.Crawford said that.
