Southern Lit Challenge @The Introverted Reader

JG over at The Introverted Reader is having a Southern Literature Challenge for 2011, and I figured, why the hell not?  Few reasons:
  1. I am a friend of JGs and want to support what she does
  2. I like challenges that don't push a ton of books on me, as I like to have time to read whatever I happen to be in the mood for, and this one fits the bill.
  3. I need an excuse to finally  read  Beautiful Creatures.  It's been sitting on my shelves for far too long now.

Basically, it's easy.  The goal:
challenge!

Read a book(s)--non-fiction or fiction of any genre, adult or young adult--written by an author from the South and set mostly in the South.
The states:
South Carolina
Georgia
Alabama
North Carolina
Virginia
Tennessee
Mississippi
Louisiana
Kentucky
West Virginia
Texas
(and Florida.  Maybe)

There are 4 levels of committment:

Level 1--C'mon in the house! Read 1 book.
Level 2--Pull up a seat and stay a while! Read 2 books
Level 3--Have a glass of sweet iced tea, honey. Read 3 books
Level 4--Y'all come back now, y'hear! Read 4 books

I'm going to go for Level 4 because I'm pretty sure I can wrangle up 4 southern books by southern authors.  Here's my tentative list of possibilities:

  1. Beautiful Creatures (and if I like it, Beautiful Darkness)
  2. perhaps a Morganville Vampires book or 3. I'm debating this, though.  It fits the challenge (Texas author, set in Texas) but I don't know how Southern a vibe they have.
  3.  The Help
  4. Possibly a Sookie Stackhouse book, as I have them and have never touched them

But really, I'm open.  If you've got a great Southern read you think I'd like, let me know!

    1. Oh no, now I might have to sign up for this one, as a southern girl I feel like its my duty! Interesting that Florida is included but not Oklahoma, I wonder why that is?

    2. Oh crap. I think The Help is set in Oklahoma. Maybe it was an oops.

    3. Misty- Don't know if you realized you don't show up for this challenge on the linky page. Just linked mine and yours wasn't there.

The Help counts, I believe its set in Mississippi.

    4. The Help definitely counts! That's an excellent book, too! Sounds like a great challenge. I've had Beautiful Creatures on my shelves for a year now so I too need to get on top of that one and if I like it the second one.

    5. You will love Beautiful Creatures, so you might as well count Beautiful Darkness as one of your books. ;-)

The Help definitely counts. It is set in Mississippi during the Civil Rights era. It doesn't get much more Southern than that!

      Thanks for the support!

    6. Hmm... this does look like a wonderful challenge. I'm going to have to look into it myself.

I'm trying to get a Morbid Romantica Challenge 2011 off that ground. I think you might be interested. I'm trying to feature it throughout the year with some author involvement. Please do stop by and let me know what you think.
