Sleeping Beauty - Then & Now, from Tricia

Today's guest post comes from Tricia @ Wicked Enchantment.  She's going to talk to us a little bit about the transition from childhood to adult with fairy tales, and Sleeping Beauty's um...steamier side... ;p
Enjoy!

Sleeping Beauty - Then & Now

When the topic of fairy tales comes into mind, the first one I think of is Sleeping Beauty. It was, as a child, my favorite of all of the fairy tales. The premise being that a beautiful young woman pricks her finger on a spindle because of a curse by a crazy jealous witch and she falls into a deep sleep that will only break with the kiss of her true love.

When I came across “The Awakening of Sleeping Beauty” many many years later I was excited that there was an adult version of the story for me to enjoy. What I didn’t realize was exactly how “adult” it really was! Don’t get me wrong, I love reading some great erotica when the mood strikes me and boy does Anne Rice write some of the best erotica in the business! No, really.. if you like erotica you MUST check out the Sleeping Beauty trilogy.

The three books in the trilogy are: The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, Beauty’s Punishment & Beauty’s Release - written by Anne Rice under the pen name of A.N. Roquelaure. These are very graphic and include events that are not suitable for children or even adults that are not open minded in nature!

The beginning of the story remains about the same, Beauty is in a deep slumper, though there is no background given for why. (It is assumed that the reader knows of the story before hand) Much of the story after her awakening turns into something completely different and so utterly delicious that it left me wishing Ann Rice would write more adult children's stories!

I love reading different adult versions of children’s stories, even if they are not in the erotica genre. I think it’s a wonderful idea and I am always looking for more books to add to my to read shelf that are similar!

  1. Yep, yep, Sleeping Beauty series from Anne Rice was definitely a shocker to me! It's very..khm.. ADULT :) I think I only got through the first book and barely, I was blushing so much I just couldn't get myself to finish the whole series! hahah, maybe I'll get back to it sometime in in the future.

I really do love Anne Rice, at least her early works. I am not much of a fun of her latest works, in my opinion her early works were absolutely the best!
    *ahhh.. Lestat!*

    Great review :)

  2. I didn't know these books existed... but I have heard that some of the original forms of Sleeping Beauty were not so Disney-friendly. In some versions, she's awakened with a rape instead of a kiss!

  3. That's actually true of any non-Disney version (at least those that haven't been "cleansed"). Or, she wakes up pregnant with twins, so same basic scenario.

  4. I loved these ones. I think they are exactly what erotic stories should be like. I have a very hard time finding any that are similar.
