TBR Tuesday: Jane Austen Ruined My Life

Jane Austen Ruined My Life
Beth Pattillo

English professor Emma Grant has always done everything just the way her minister father told her she should -- a respectable marriage, a teaching job at a good college, and plans for the requisite two children. Life was prodigiously good, as her favorite author Jane Austen might say, until the day Emma finds her husband in bed with another woman. Suddenly, all her romantic notions a la Austen are exposed for the foolish dreams they are.
Denied tenure in the wake of the scandal and left penniless by the ensuing divorce, Emma packs up what few worldly possessions she has left and heads to England on a quest to find the missing letters of Jane Austen. Locating the elusive letters, however, isn't as straightforward as Emma hoped. The owner of the letters proves coy about her prize possessions, sending Emma on a series of Austen-related tasks that bring her closer and closer to the truth, but the sudden reappearance of Emma's first love makes everything more complicated.
In the end, Emma learns that doing the right thing has very little to do with other people's expectations and everything to do with her own beliefs. Laced with fictional excerpts from the missing letters, Jane Austen Ruined My Life is the story of a woman betrayed who uncovers the deeper meaning of loyalty.

I bought this one a couple of months ago with the intentions of reading it for Jane in June, but as the Jane pile grew, I had to start prioritizing, and this was one of the books that got cut for the time being.  I have the unfortunate mantra of "Maybe next time..."
So what do you guys think of this one?  Anyone read it?  Am I majorly missing out by having put it on the back burner for this round of JnJ?

  1. It sounds familiar, but I've never read it. It sounds good though. Next Jane in June maybe?
My TBR is quite a mountain. I have a list on my blog. It's over 100 books.

  2. I read this 2 years ago when it came out. At that time, it was a gem because I have just started reading Austen-related sequels, spin-offs and modern adaptation and I really love the premise of the novel. It is quite a fresh perspective infusing Austen elements with contemporary fiction. I find this novel is better than its sequel, Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart.

  3. I did indeed read Jane Austen ruined my life. What I liked most about this novel... It was like following in the footsteps of Jane Austen as she lived her life. I saw places where she lived and visited. It was a different way of viewing England.
It's like Chic Lit on an Austen fieldtrip. :)

  6. I haven't read it yet but it's on my list. I enjoyed her book Mr Darcy Broke My Heart, so I'm reasonably confident I'd like this one, as well. My tbr list is shorter now than it has been in awhile, which isn't saying much because it's still ridiculously long. The next Austen adaptation I'm hoping to make time to read is Abigail Reynolds' Morning Light.

  7. I've read this one twice. But for the life of me I don't know why at the moment....brain drain. However, I still have it which means I enjoyed it.
