Wishlist Wednesday: Emma by Jane Austen (the Penguin Classics edition)

Emma
Jane Austen

'I never have been in love; it is not my way, or my nature; and I do not think I ever shall'

Beautiful, clever, rich - and single - Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protégée Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen's most flawless work.

Of course I already own a copy of Emma.  Well, two copies of Emma, but one's in an omnibus, so that's different....Right?
Anywho, I'm seriously about to make it 3 copies because OMG LOOK AT THAT AWESOMENESS.

I was talking to Bonnie from A Backwards Story about this cover last night, and she had the brilliant idea for me to contact Jillian Tamaki, the artist who hand-embroidered this astounding piece of awesomeness, and see if she'd be interested in participating in Jane in June.  So I did today.  [Fingers crossed.]
Regardless, though, the entire series of Penguin Threads Classics will be finding a home on my shelves.  I just wish the mass-produced ones could be actually embroidered like this.  It makes me want to take up embroidery.

  1. Holy. CRAP. This. Is. EPIC. Why is this not coming out until October? I can't pre-order it because I don't know where I'll be living then. However, I am so getting this one for myself.

  3. Since I catalog books for a public library, I noticed "Penguin Threads" on the cover. (I never would have noticed this before I started cataloging.) Could this mean that Penguin will publish more classics in this fashion, with beautiful embroidery? Wow! That would be great.
I think this version of Emma is going on my wish list. It's so beautiful & different.
Thanks for showing it to us.

  4. As far as I know, there are three planned for now: Emma, The Secret Garden and Black Beauty.

  5. I had no idea that was embroidered, and I hadn't heard of the Penguins Threads Classics. So cool! There are 3 copies of Emma in my house (2 on my shelf and 1 on my daughter's), but there's always room for 1 more...especially when it's that cool!
