Book Chat: Movie Adaptations

I've had this idea bouncing around in my head lately where I wanted to do little "book chats" once a week or so, to get people involved in book discussions and as a new way to get recommendations, see people's enthusiasm, etc.  I just couldn't figure out how I wanted to do it.  And then I realized - it's kinda perfect for vlog format!

So, here's the first Book Chat.  I'm going to (hopefully) make this a regular thing, as long as it doesn't turn out to be a big flop that no one gives a flying frak about.  I'll even make a button and everything. Eventually.
If you have ideas for topics or questions for future Book Chats, please let me know.
Also, you can leave your answers in the comments, of course, but if you want to be SUPER AWESOME (and who doesn't?), make your own post or vlog and link it up as a video response so everyone can see!

  1. Oh cool feature.
    I love it.
I haven't read or seen this but I've wanted to.
I love the actress that plays the lead in the film.

Good question for future use: How do you feel the main character was represented in the film? Did you picture him or her differently?

  3. I did it. I made a video, and I was SO nervous. But it's up and I had fun.

  4. I LOVE I Capture the Castle and I had no idea there was a movie! I must try and find it now because if you say it captures the book (er.. no pun intended) wonderfully then I need to see it.

Books to movie - well, I'm going to say Harry Potter because I think the casting director did a brilliant job for that franchise. I tend to not like movie adaptations at all because they change way too much from the book, so HP is the only thing I can think of that didn't do that.

Found you through Juju on Goodreads and then followed links - imagine my delight when you started talking about I Capture the Castle, which I have been trying to get people to read since 1999 when I first read it! Definitely putting you in the google reader list now.

Topic idea - what was the best book you bought just because you loved the cover. Or what was the worst book you bought just because you loved the cover.

  5. I'm going to email you, Cat, so that I know you see this, but I'm going to put it here too for everyone else:

If you have Netflix you can watch I Capture the Castle NOW. It's on Instant Streaming, and I have lost many hours to it. :)

  6. I love this feature, but I've never done a vlog before and honestly I'm kind of nervous to start. I would be willing to do them in the future, but I think I'll just comment for this one.

My choice for best book to movie adaptation is A Clockwork Orange. I think it's actually a teeny tiny bit better than the book, although I loved that too. The film was made in the 70's, so it's obviously dated in look and costume. However, the essence of the film, the acting, the directing/cinematography, and the music are timeless. Malcolm MacDowell is amazing as Alex DeLarge. He manages to be brutal, arrogant, and conniving, but still gains the viewers' sympathy. It makes the viewer uncomfortable to be on his side even though he is the best that this dystopian world has to offer. The directing is superb. So much is said in a scene without any speech, but by composition and placement of people and things. The music is mostly classical by Beethoven and Rossini, but the original compositions by Wendy Carlos really enhance the uncomfortable mood of the film. I think A Clockwork Orange is one of the best films ever made and I highly recommend it.

I've never heard of I Capture the Castle, but I've just added it to my Netflix queue.

  7. Great idea. I saw the movie, but I didn't loved it. I liked it, but didn't loved it. Though I have to say that the end was really good and also a bit sad! :)

I haven't read the book, but some bloggers did recommended it to me saying it was better than the movie. So maybe in the near future I'm going to read it. ;)
