Book Chat: Bookish Pet Peeves (#1)

Hey KITTENS* it's time for this week's Book Chat w/ The Book Rat (<--- ^_~ ), and this week's topic is
BOOKISH PET PEEVES.
I realized quickly on that I couldn't fit all of my lit pet peeves in 1 short video, so this is part 1.  Feel free to do your chat as you see fit.  And remember, you can get involved in the discussion at any time, and if you do, link it up below so everyone can see your take!

*an extra special "kittens" for Basically Amazing Ash.

  1. I'm so with you here! Absolutely 0 point in reading a book if 395 pages out of 400 are registered irrelevant by some stupid plot mechanism. LAZY WRITING ALERT.

  2. I also hate the deus ex machina. It's only acceptable to me when there are actual gods involved like in Medea.

I also really hate abusive men being portrayed as hot and attractive. It especially bothered me in Andrea Cremer's Nightshade. Ren was incredibly domineering and abusive. The fact that the reader was expected to find him attractive really disgusted me. No amount of supernatural stuff is ever going to make that behavior ok. This is the only really big pet peeve that comes to mind.

  3. What a great topic!

Thanks for teaching me this new term.

Come out in the wash? Nice. True. I never thought of it this way.

So give us some books where this happened :)

  4. You want me to call people out, Juju? I was trying to be nice.
Well, more trying to be concise than anything, but still...

  5. Also, Titania: I am working my way up to that rant. I'm not opposed to alpha-maleness, and there are instances where it's done well. But some authors really make me wonder about how healthy their attractions and relationships are...

  7. I haz a few things to say-

1- No matter how creepy I find the kitten thing, it warms my heart that you are obviously going out of your way to make me feel special. :)

    2- You are pretty

2a- (I promise that I'm not trying to sound like a creeper, although I do recognize that the proximity of 1 & 2 might make it questionable)

3- I HATE dues ex machina! Like, A LOT!

4- I also say it differently than you. I was confused for a sec. I think it's mostly just how we pronounce dues :P

5- I SO need to make one of these but I don't like my webcam. :( It doesn't sync at all & rants w/ bad syncing kinda suck :(

    6- I think I'm pretty much done now :P

  8. I hate that too! You get so excited, there's all this build up and then it just fizzles and is such a disappointment. I can understand writers having this great idea and then not really knowing where to go with it, but if that's the case, don't write that book, or wait to write it until you have a good ending, you know?

Anyway, I've just discovered this meme, and I think I'm going to participate next week! This weekend I'm attempting my first ever video for In My Mailbox, so if I can actually work up the courage to do it and post it, I'll attempt one of these, too lol

  9. Marie: Don't know if you'll see this, but if you do, I hope you DO participate next week, whether you end up being comfortable doing it in a vlog format or not.
And as for the vlogging itself, just have fun!

And do you know what your next topic is going to be? I might want to give this a go :) -Nevermind, the end of the video just told me next weeks topic! Thank you :)
