So there.
;)
By now you've seen this in my [clinically insane] September TBR, so you know I'm looking forward to trying to squeeze it in this month - and I know from your enthusiastic response, a lot of you are looking forward to this one, too:
All These Things I've Done by Gabrielle Zevin
Speculative, 368 pages
September 6th 2011 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR)
In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal, paper is hard to find, water is carefully rationed, and New York City is rife with crime and poverty. And yet, for Anya Balanchine, the sixteen-year-old daughter of the city's most notorious (and dead) crime boss, life is fairly routine. It consists of going to school, taking care of her siblings and her dying grandmother, trying to avoid falling in love with the new assistant D.A.'s son, and avoiding her loser ex-boyfriend. That is until her ex is accidentally poisoned by the chocolate her family manufactures and the police think she's to blame. Suddenly, Anya finds herself thrust unwillingly into the spotlight--at school, in the news, and most importantly, within her mafia family.

If chocolate and coffee really were illegal, which would you miss more (and would you try to get them on the black market)?

I am not a coffee drinker, but I do like my chocolate. I can't see myself dealing with the black market though, so I may have to give up my chocolate for good. :(
ReplyDeleteLove my coffee, I would definitely HAVE to buy it in the black market. No coffee equals no life.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely miss my Starbucks coffee. I would have to buy it on the market also. Tore923@aol.com
ReplyDeleteProbably chocolate. I only need coffee for my all-nighters for school, but I don't particularly enjoy it. Chcocolate on the other hand, I do enjoy.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely chocolate. Black market? You betcha!
ReplyDeleteYou guys r going to think I'm so strange, but don't like either lol! So I guess I would be good, lol.
ReplyDeleteWhile I love the smell of coffee, I can't stand the taste. So definitely chocolate, and you bet I'd be buying that baby wherever I could find it. How can you live without chocolate?
ReplyDeletejaidahsmommy(at)comcast(dot)net
I would try my best to get chocolate! I can go without the other, but I don't think a day goes by that I don't eat at least a little chocolate:)

Omgosh, pick a hard question, why don't you? Right, well...
ReplyDeleteChocolate. Because I get strong cravings like every stereotypical woman out there. Not coffee, though I might've picked coffee a month ago. Recently I managed to wane myself off coffee because I was tired of being busy a whole day and missing out on my caffeine fix and getting a headache because of that. Now I can function without. Yay for will power! and while I don't NEED chocolate to survive, per se, I'd still be VERY crazy mad if it disappeared off the market.
Random but cool question. :D And I've been wanting to read this book for a while! Score! Hope I win... but good luck to everyone else as well. :P
Thanks for the contest! It would be unbearable is chocolate were contraband! Coffee I can do without but sometimes a girl just has to have chocolate. I would try to find a substitute but if the opportunity came up to acquire some, I just might do it!!
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely miss chocolate more. I need chocolate, whereas I just kind of like coffee. Not to mention, I can't even drink coffee anymore, so there wouldn't be much to miss there anyway.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! :)
Oh I would totally sell my soul on the black market for coffee dude!!!
ReplyDeleteI need my chocolate. I just might have to turn to the black market to get some!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.

I don't drink coffee, but I might just turn to the black market for chocolate!
ReplyDeleteI'd miss chocolate more, I guess, because I don't drink coffee, but I wouldn't miss chocolate enough to get it on the black market. Take my Dr Pepper, though, and we might have a problem...
ReplyDeleteWell *technically* it's caffeine that's illegal in the book, so your Dr Pepper would unfortunately be a goner as well...
ReplyDeleteI'd reeeeeeeeeeeeally miss chocolate. I'd probably be heading to the black market to get some.
ReplyDeleteI would keep coffee and get chocolate on black market. I get horrible headaches and caffeine helps. Liquid is a necessity. This question is not fair.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I didn't know we could ask fun questions with publisher giveaways. I thought about doing that w/this one myself, lol.
ReplyDeleteI just finished the book and it was fun. I was shocked to find out it will be a trilogy, though! At least it doesn't have a crazy ending that makes you suffer...
Obv. not entering to win, but oh, I would miss coffee more. I only like chocolate when it's mixed w/something (esp pb), but mmmm coffee in the am!
Coffee or chocolate, coffee or chocolate, coffee or chocolate...sorry, I would die without either. Probably especially coffee. My mom, sister and I would be the black market's most frequent return customers. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, glad we are talking about coffee and not tea :P If I had to pick between coffee and chocolate...I'd have to say I would have to get chocolate one way or another.
ReplyDeleteI'd miss chocolate the most...but not enough to rish the black market!!
ReplyDelete♥ Melissa @ Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf
Definitely coffee! I'm one of those rare people who dislikes chocolate so a word without sweets to me...is just whatever. Coffee, on the other hand...
ReplyDeleteCHOCOLATE.
ReplyDeleteCHOCOLATE CHOCOLATE CHOCOLATE.
(I should stop or people are going to think I have an addiction or something... WHO WHAT ME?)
I am way too much of a chicken and do-gooder to try the black market... what a shame...
Thanks for the giveaway! :)

...would that include coffee ice cream? Because if it does I would so hit up the black market for some. I'm addicted. :o
ReplyDeleteI would miss chocolate so much more :) holy crap, I will die without it. And yes going to the black market is essential!
ReplyDeleteI like coffee well enough but it's not needed for survival and chocolate is my moral enemy, I may even be happy to not have to face it again. I don't think I would really mind losing either one, although I'm sure that early mornings would hurt for my mom (and probably myself by extension.)
ReplyDelete... And anyways, I'm sort of fickle, I probably wouldn't venture anywhere near the black market unless I was getting an at least 50% discount.
I could live without coffee, I cannot stand the smell of it (which makes me feel ick). But chocolate, now that is one thing that I couldn't live without, although I don't think I would go so far as to get it off the black market to have some. =)

Neither b/c I've never drank coffee and I gave up chocolate 12 years ago. (My teeth are bad b/c of my sweet tooth back then :P)
ReplyDeleteI'm not a coffee drinker, but either way I'd definitely miss chocolate!
ReplyDeleteI would miss chocolate and I would try to find it on the black market for sure!
ReplyDeleteI would definitely miss chocolate more as I'm not much of a coffee drinker.
