TBR Tuesday: Wither

Most of us have books we've bought with all intentions of reading (or maybe just because it was cheap!), only to have them fade away on a shelf or disappear into a stack of books, never to be seen or thought of again.
TBR Tuesday is a way to talk about the books we own but haven't read, see what other people think about them, and help us decide whether to bump it up our list or knock it off completely.

On my TBR

Wither by Lauren DeStefano
Dystopian, 358 pages
Published March 22nd 2011 by Simon & Schuster

At age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years to live. Thanks to a botched effort to create a perfect race, all females live to be twenty, and males live to age twenty-five. While geneticists seek a miracle antidote, orphans roam the streets and polygamy abounds. After Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she is desperate to escape from her husband’s strange world, which includes a sinister father-in-law in search of the antidote and a slew of sister wives who are not to be trusted. On the cusp of her seventeenth birthday, Rhine attempts to flee—but what she finds is a society spiraling into anarchy.

I'm not going to lie, I bought this on cover appeal.  I mean, I did want to read it and I do think the story sounds interesting, but I was hearing enough mixed and negative reviews that this would normally have been a library-get if not for that gorgeous cover.  I intended to read it soonish after getting it, but yeah...that didn't happen.  And lately it's been kinda slipping down the stack.  I mean, there are just so many books, this one seems like it might be in danger of being always on deck but never at bat.  (I just made a sports reference.  Would you look at that...)
So I think it maybe needs a boost.  Anyone lovelovelove this one?  Hatehatehate it?  Is it more than a pretty face?

  1. I really liked Wither. I thought the ending wasn't completely believable, but that was the only thing that lacked a bit. It's a good, solid dystopian novel that I would recommend.

  2. I'm with you, I haven't read it but I've heard mix things.

Cover love is strong stuff, no?

  3. It was good, but not spectacular.
    + for character development
    - for lack of worldbuilding.
I'm not big into YA but I gave in and read it based upon the hype and was not disappointed.

  4. I liked it a lot but I didn't love it. To me the ending was rushed but up until that point it was really good.

  5. My review of WITHER: http://abackwardsstory.blogspot.com/2011/03/wither-by-lauren-destefano-debut-author.html (and this, too: http://abackwardsstory.blogspot.com/2011/03/wither-broken-down.html)

I liked it a lot, actually. I thought it was one of the better books in the dystopian genre. I've only heard positives. I'm surprised you heard so many negatives! I wonder if it was due to the concept of polygamy...?

  6. This one slipped in my TBR pile as well after some of the negative reviews I read...maybe I'll give it a shot after the series is all done.

  9. No, Bonnie, most of the negatives I heard were with the writing and the ending. I think most people who intend to read it know about the polygamy aspect and that's part of why they're reading it, so I don't really recall any objections on that.
