Wishlist Wednesday: We Have Always Lived in the Castle

Click here to be taken to the Helluva Halloween Main Page!

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Classics/Mystery/Horror, 146 pages
Published October 31st 2006 by Penguin Classics (first published 1962)
Taking readers deep into a labyrinth of dark neurosis, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a deliciously unsettling novel about a perverse, isolated, and possibly murderous family and the struggle that ensues when a cousin arrives at their estate.

Normally for Wishlist Wednesday, I do books I want to own and haven't read, but today I'm doing one I've not only read and reviewed, but loved.  I just don't own it (and I need to rectify that).  In fact, I'd count it among my all-time favorite books, so it's a travesty that I don't have my own pretty shiny copy.  I need to stop being distracted by all the other pretty shiny copies...
When I was thinking of this year's theme of quirky/oddball books, I had an instant where I wished I hadn't read this yet, because it would have been absolutely perfect. I suppose you can look back at my review, but I really need to pick this up so I can push it on some more people.
Also, I really like this cover, too ------>
I may end up getting both at some point...

What's on your wishlist this wednesday?

  1. I read "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" as a teenager and loved it. I got a free copy and it was totally unlike anything I'd ever read at that point. I don't own it anymore, but I have fond memories of reading it. I read Angela Carter around the same time. Have you read any of her stuff?

And on my wishlist...the next volumes I have to read of Astonishing X-Men and Fables.

  2. I tried so hard to get my bookclub to read this this month, but they weren't interested so much :/
I still want to read it though!

  3. Normally horror doesn't appeal to me, but this book keeps on getting raves from people whose taste aligns with mine, and I do own a copy. Maybe around Halloween I'll pull it off the shelf, thanks for the reminder!

  4. I love Shirley Jackson! This week on my wishlist, I have Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Anna Dressed in Blood, and The Night Circus. I have others, but those are the ones I'll be seeking down first.
