TBR Tuesday: Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side

Most of us have books we've bought with all intentions of reading (or maybe just because it was cheap!), only to have them fade away on a shelf or disappear into a stack of books, never to be seen or thought of again.
TBR Tuesday is a way to talk about the books we own but haven't read, see what other people think about them, and help us decide whether to bump it up our list or knock it off completely.
[If you're more a book borrower than a book buyer, you're still welcome to participate with the books that you've been meaning to read and haven't!]

On my TBR

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey
Paranormal Romance, 351 pages
Published February 1st 2009 by Harcourt
The undead can really screw up your senior year ...

Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-a-life” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancĂ©. Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war—and save Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction.

I got an ecopy of this awhile back because even though I don't own an ereader, it was FREE on Nook and Kindle!  I mean, come on!  I can read it on my computer or phone, if I need to, but on top of that, I do intend to own an ereader (as soon as I can make up my mind to which one), so by the time I do, I'll have a nice little stockpile of books to go on it. ;P
Anyway, I picked this up just to have, but I've heard it's really fun and am wondering if it's a good reading-funk breaker - should I wait until I have an ereader to read it on (who knows when), or should I cuddle up to my computer on a reading-slumpy day and get to know Jessica?
Let me know your thoughts on Jessica's Guide in the comments!

(Oh, and by the way - it's STILL FREE on Amazon... Love ya!)

What's on your TBR?

  1. I've been meaning to pick this one up as well, and I got the free download on my nook so I have little excuses left.

I have heard great things about this and I love the sound of it.

  3. I *loved* this book. I can easily name all the vampire books that I actually enjoyed on one hand. This is one of them. I was pleasantly surprised. And Lucius is not your typical must-have-vampire-guy. There's a mean streak to him that is quite refreshing amidst all the swoon worthy vampire guys out there.

  4. I got this as well when it was free on B&N. I seriously need to make it through my book challenges and TBR Soon list so I can get started reading this. Ugh so many books.

As for choosing an ereader, my first response is Nook cause 1. I have a Nook and would gladly loan you books 2. You can purchase epubs from just about any ebook store (except Amazon) and sideload them to the Nook. 3. In store support available.

That being said, B&N is talking about spinning off the Nook portion so that it can get further financial backing (and compete with Amazon) and B&N can focus on its brick and mortar stores. So I would wait to see what happens with that. I hope the outcome is good but you never really know.

My second choice would be Kobo because I like their ebook store set up and the prices are similar to B&N and Amazon. Choosing an ereader is hard and I can honestly say I use mine mostly for free ebooks and library loans. That in itself pays for the ereader. Especially considering my lifestyle.

  5. Thank you for your very informative response, Minda!

I would probably use mine mostly for free and loaned books, too, and I am leaning toward the Nook, not only because it's epub friendly, but also because I'm leaning toward a tablet style, and have not heard great things about the other features on the Kindle Fire.

  6. I go back and forth on Nook and Kindle...but I ended up with a Nook Color and my kid loves it and I love it so we're happy with that.

Jessica's Guide...too formulaic with the broody and dangerous boy with the girl that is destined for him kind of stuff. I couldn't get past the first 100 pages. But it seems like most people enjoy it...Can't wait for your review when you get to it.

Oh, love your new blog look!

  7. I've got a copy of this somewhere on my shelf, though it might take a little digging to find it.

P.S. I vote Nook! Lol. From the reviews I've read, it sounds like that's the one to go with. Plus I'm a little biased, because I'm a B&N girl and though I like Amazon, I've always liked B&N better. I have a first generation Nook, like, the FIRST one they ever came out with. I love it and I've had no problems with it, but I'm really wanting to upgrade to the tablet...

  8. Back in the day, vampire novels belonged in the horror section. Well maybe a handful as tasteful love stories in the romance section. Nowadays they're everywhere from the classics to the poorly written teen romances.
