The Sweetest Spell by Suzanne Selfors
416 pages
Expected publication: August 21st 2012 by Walker & Company
Emmeline Thistle has always had a mysterious bond with cows, beginning on the night of her birth, when the local bovines saved the infant cast aside to die in the forest. But Emmeline was unaware that this bond has also given her a magical ability to transform milk into chocolate, a very valuable gift in a kingdom where chocolate is more rare and more precious than gold or jewels. Then one day Owen Oak, a dairyman’s son, teaches Emmeline to churn milk into butter—and instead she creates a delicious chocolate confection that immediately makes her a target for every greedy, power-hungry person in the kingdom of Anglund. Only Owen loves Emmeline for who she truly is, not her magical skill. But is his love enough to save her from the danger all around her?
In a departure from her contemporary teen romances, Suzanne Selfors crafts an irresistible re-imagined fairy tale that will tempt readers with a delicious story of love that is sweeter than the richest chocolate.
Don't forget to leave Suzanne some love on her FTF interview!!

I want to read this because it's so cool to see a book about The Ugly Duckling! This was my WoW last week for FTF....oooh, I guess I missed WoW today. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to reading this one! <3
Thanks for the giveaway!
Okay, now that I've read Suzanne's description of this one, I want to read it for that, three handsome guys, action, adventure and for the beautiful cover and I love it when the girl with nothing all the sudden has everything!
ReplyDeleteMost under rated fairy tale? The Little Match Girl. I know it's grim but I love it.
Heather
I read her book SAVING JULIET and I loved it! I loved how she handled the play.
ReplyDeleteI would love to read how she handles this story. That's why I want to read it.
The Sweetest Spell has definitely caught my attention. I would love to get my hands on it. I love how Suzanne Selfors was inspired by the Midas myth and let the story evolve from there. As for my favorite underrated fairy tale? It's so hard to choose, but I think I'll say The Snow Queen.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds delicious! I always love to read books about chocolate and a fairy tale book about chocolate will be even better!
ReplyDeleteFrom the first time I read the synopsis, I couldn't wait to read it! It sounds kind of ridiculous, but it's MAGIC. CHOCOLATE. MILK. It makes me hungry every time I read it. (I guess I'll have to have some chocolate nearby as I read.)
ReplyDeleteOh, and the most underrated fairy tale is "The Riddle" by the Brothers Grimm. It's the perfect example of just how queer fairy tales are, bursting with magic, dead animals, and lots of riddles!
And I tweeted!
Cows?! Not wolves, not eagles, but cows? I like cows - all animals - but still - unexpected. OK, then I saw it's a retelling of the ugly duckling. I'm sure all will be clear and natural in context. lol.
ReplyDeleteOn to the interview.
Haha. The Little Match Girl is grim. If that had been spoken out loud I wouldn't have been able to resist, even at the risk of having objects thrown at me.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I want to read this book to see if she makes the mystical cow connection thing work. It could be seriously moooooving. (Yes, I know that was terrible, but I cud not resist...I'll stop now.)
ReplyDeleteWhy do I want to read this? It's a fairy tale...and involves CHOCOLATE...and the cover's gorgeous...and it's a fairy tale ABOUT CHOCOLATE! How can you go wrong? ;o)
ReplyDelete+1 for tweeting

Thanks for the giveaway Misty!! I always loved the ugly duckling growing up so reading a retelling of it woud be amazing!!

I'd love to read this because it sounds like a really unique take on a story that doesn't get much attention. The most underrated fairy tale? In my humble opinion, Thousand Furs.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! My favorite underrated fairy tale (and my favorite anyway) is the "Six Swans."
ReplyDeleteOK, now for the giveaway entry. I want to read the book because I liked the interview a lot - and Misty's 4 stars.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the experience yet to have a favorite underrated fairy tale. I'm new to this but have become completely ensorcelled. Haha. I learned that word in a retelling. I like it.
I liked "seriously moooooving" too, Christina.
I want to read The Sweetest Spell because it just looks so cute! And funny and light-hearted and adorable! Thanks for the chance to win! :D
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds very interesting!!! I loved Goose Girl by Shannon Hale and this story seemed to remind me of it so I would love to read it!!!
ReplyDeletei want to read this book because i'm very interested to read about the so called ugly duckling being brought up with the cows. that's not an animal i expected and it's got to be good : )
ReplyDeleteI want to read this because I have never read a retelling like this and it would be awesome to read something different.
ReplyDeleteBesides this book looking so darn clever? I just love the concept! I'll be reading it whether I win or not.
ReplyDeleteMost underrated fairy tale? Godfather Death. Or the Little Mermaid.
My favorite underrated fairy tale is Rumplestiltzkin.

I want to read this book because it looks like a beautiful new addition to the Fairy-Tale genre, and being the FT nut that I am, I love a good FT! And the Ugly Duckling? WAY COOL.
ReplyDeleteI think Sleeping Beauty is underrated. It feels like I'm the only one that knows the songs and the story; the other girls were bored by it.
ReplyDeleteI would like to consider Peter Pan a fairy tale. I don't think it gets enough credit for having a strong "female" main character. Although Peter is written as a male, the first and most famous person who performed as Peter, on stage, yearly, was Mary Martin. She was terriffic!!!
ReplyDeleteI love fairy tales. I love Beauty and the Beast. I would love to read this book. Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com
ReplyDeleteI want to read this because my friend and I have some insides jokes/obsession with cows, and I think the use of the phrase "local bovines" in the summary is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteThis book had me at chocolate! Turning milk into chocolate, how cool is that?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite underrated fairy tale is Snow White and Rose Red. I have loved that tale since I was a kid and it saddens me to know not many people know about it.
I would live this bookit looks sweet and beautiful. Everything a fairy tale should be. There are so many fairy tales I would love to read. If only I was rich I could read more of the underrated or less explored tales. Wining something from fairy tale fort night would make my year!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite underrated fairytale is the Little Match Girl. As a little girl, I used to watch the movie all the time.
ReplyDeleteUnderrated? Well, I don't see very many, if ever, literary retellings of Sleeping Beauty. THAT is one of my faves.
ReplyDeleteWOOHOO this book. I've never really read a story quite like this one so THAT SHOULD BE AMAZING.
Oh this one looks cute!
ReplyDeleteI'll go with The Boy Who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers as my favorite underrated fairy tale. Not many people seem to have heard of it and it's so funny and different.
i think it is the Twelve Dancing Princesses. There aren't a lot of books or movies out about it.
ReplyDeleteI want to read this because I love Suzanne Selfors! Smells Like Dog is THE BEST dog book I have ever read (because I hate sad dog books).
ReplyDeleteI'd love to read this because I too, believe chocolate is better than gold! Thanks for the info and chance to win!

I have to admit, reading the synopsis of this one made me laugh out loud...and made me desperately want to read it. Seriously? A fairy tale about a girl with an affinity for cows and the ability to make chocolate milk?! I love it. The whole concept is such a step away from the fancier tales we normally see told, but totally in tune with the old school.
ReplyDeleteI want to read the book because the cover is beautiful, I love the author, and can't wait to see if the book is as Rumpelstiltskin/Midas cross like it seems to be...
ReplyDeleteI admit that I desperately want to read this book - I read Saving Juliet eons ago and loved it (despite the eye colour inconsistencies). :X
ReplyDeleteMy favorite underrated fairy tale? East of the Sun, West of the Moon as well as the Goose Girl. Hands down. Technically they aren't THAT underrated (in that case, perhaps the Black Bull of Norroway..?), but they are definitely much less retold as opposed to Cinderella and the rest. XD
Fena
A book about cows saving the heroine? Turning milk to chocolate? This sounds so intriguing. I love the cover too.
ReplyDeleteKing Thrushbeard, because it is incredibly icky. It's great fodder for a feminist retelling.
ReplyDeleteI want to read this just to see where the story goes and to see how the author imagination takes form.
ReplyDeleteThe Ugly Duckling is actually my favorite underrated fairy tale .. You don't see a lot of that so I'm so looking to reading this!
ReplyDeleteWow! This is the first time I've heard of this book! It sounds very unique. I just put it on my wishlist.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen any retellings of the ugly duckling and I have to say, I really love chocolate. :)
