I ADORE Tamora Pierce. Before Shannon Hale, TP was my favorite author, hands down. Funny that you should mention the lioness series because I just bought all four in like new condition for $12. I'm so happy! I own all her Tortall books and they're amazing.

ReplyDelete"The Raging Quiet" by Sherryl Jordan is a little known treasure of a tale. Lucy Maud Montgomery's "Blue Castle". Very different from her better known works. Better!

ReplyDeleteA few that come to mind for me are:
Poison by Chris Wooding (alternate fantasy-world with the fey, but a really wicked twist at the end)
Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow (a verse novel about werewolves)
The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly (boy gets sent to a world where fairy tales come to life -- very dark and gritty)
Rosa and the Veil of Gold by Wilkie Collins (lots of Russian folklore in this one)
A Long, Long Sleep by Ana Sheehan (this was released in 2011, but I found it didn't get very much hype, which was too bad)
This is All: The Pillowbook of Cordelia Kent by Aidan Chambers (I actually love pretty much everything by Aidan Chambers, but no one else seems to know about him; this novel is a friggin' doorstopper [it's huuuge] but it was one of the most amazing YA contemps I've ever read)
Oh, and <3 Tamora Pierce too. I didn't discover her until high school, but I've read a big chunk of her work since then. Soo good.
Kim, I don't think I've ever read The Blue Castle, but I love LMM. I'll have to look into it.
ReplyDeleteintoyourlungs: I have This is All but I haven't read it yet BECAUSE it is such a doorstopper. Just ridiculously huge. I just can't seem to bring myself to tackle it quite yet.
Poison, Sharp Teeth and A Long, Long Sleep are all on my to-read list, and I love The Book of Lost Things. Haven't heard of the last book. :)

ReplyDeleteAHH! Someone who loved Kindred. I kind of stumbled upon the book but I absolutely FELL in love with it AND Octavia Butler. So happy to see it on your list. I haven't heard of any of the other ones, but I'm very glad you shared them. I really want to read Madapple now, it sounds amazing!
ReplyDeleteI love Tamora Pierce, but I don't think she counts as underrated. I have not read An Old-Fashioned Girl in years, but I loved it when I did.

Underrated, Liz? No, I think everyone who knows her loves her appropriately.

I've seen Tamora Pierce in most libraries I've been in. I loved Alana.
ReplyDeleteThe Hollow Kingdom by Clare B. Dunkle. Fairytale-ish, but darker. The goblin king and his sort of kidnapped bride. Strong female lead. This was one of the first books I remember loving as a teen.
