Friday Face Off: The Radleys

I noticed this cover switch awhile back, but just haven't had a chance to work it in. It's for Matt Haig's The Radleys, which I bought in its original hardback based on recommendations, rather than design - though I do have to say, the design is much cooler in person, with little embossed blood splotches, and the like. But the redesign, which has a totally different vibe, and seems like it would belong to a completely different book (judging purely on cover, as I haven't read it), actually really draws me in with it's quirky, slightly off-putting composition. It makes me curious. It makes me wish that that was the cover on my edition. And I'll bet you anything, it also keeps men from picking it up, whereas the other cover...
But I'm curious which you'd reach for. Does the new cover make you rethink whether you'd want to read this one, where the original didn't really work? Or is it the opposite, and you think the new cover too fluffy? Which would call to you in a bookstore or library?
Which one did it better?

Last Week on FFO: Kiersten White's Mind Games found itself in another match-up, this time with itself -sort of. The US Mind Games went head to head with the UK version, which is called Sister Assassin, and unfortunately for the reining champ, Mind Games took a major hit; the vast majority of you liked the quirkier cover style - and the word 'assassin' - on the UK version.

  1. Definitely the one with the red dress!! It made me smile and wonder and get a little spooked out - all at once! Definitely. :D

  2. I have read the book and based on that I prefer the original cover. If I were coming across it for the first time, I think the new cover would appeal to me more. I'm not sure I think it conveys the right message in my opinion, though.

  5. Hmm I'm not too keen of either of them to be honest but I think I prefer the new cover: the fence one kindof looks like an amateur e-book or something. I like the bats on the new one too :-) x

  9. The girl makes it look like a contemporary but the bats make it look dark -- very curious. I think I'd have to read it before I judged which suited it better, but I would want the newer one for my shelves

  11. I don't like vampire stories, but The Radleys cover with the bats and red dress makes me want to drop everything and snag that book. Is it like a dark comedy? It seems like it would be. I love it!

  12. Neither cover does anything for me, but I AM concerned that the red dress girl is about to accidentally moon the bats.
