I'm so guilty of giving in to a pretty cover. I fell for the Amy Plum covers also.
ReplyDeleteThe finished cover of Shadowlands has that velvety, matte finish. It's so soft and pretty and I just looove that cover.
I was really disappointed in the Jackson Pearce covers being redesigned - just like everyone else in the world. I cannot figure out, for the life of me, why they would ditch such a creative, unique, and beautiful design in favor of something so bland, boring, and commonplace. I was so excited for the mermaid cover to come out, and then it was a freaking locket. I couldn't believe it.
My favorite covers are creepy: The Murmurings, The Madman's Daughter, Hysteria, Amelia Anna is Dead and Gone. I love illustrated covers: The Nightmare Affair, Unspoken, Sisters Red.
Ohhh, Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone - I AM going to get that someday, on both cover and title appeal!
ReplyDeleteBasically agree with you across the board, actually.
I love the rose petal wrap-around on Shattered Souls. So pretty.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the cover for Entwined. It's one of my favorites (out of all the books I own) and it's the biggest reason I ever picked it up. I had no idea what it was about when I found it. I just can't get over the dress and the hair!
ReplyDeleteAh! A fellow Jason Chan fan! I adore his art. It just immerses you in story with his use of detail and color... Beautiful work- and so distinctly his! I don't know how it's so different from other digital artist's work, but I can recognize his pictures.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, after I flip to the back, see that it is indeed a cover by him, I want it.
I do judge a book by it's cover- maybe more then I should...? You see the front before you read the synopsis- I think the cover is (or should be) the first step drawing you into the story. The world, the mood, maybe hints about what's happening on those pages you're about to turn. I often let the covers sweep me away, pull me into the tale.
But, as you said, it doesn't always work out that way. Sometimes covers can be so so misleading and made shiny only for the purpose of marketing. It's kind of a shame, actually, and not just because we may feel slightly misled about what we were going to read. That author deserves to have their book's world/mood/etc. properly represented.
Still, some covers are simply masterpieces you can't help but appreciate, no matter how good the read. I agree- it's an art-form in itself. ^.^
I love the beautiful dresses, the buttery covers, beautiful fonts, dark covers, something very mysterious, I love the covers you showed. I like the dresses on the Fallen series.

I have certain things I like that make me want the book more. Not necessarily more pretty or beautiful but things that make me wonder about the story inside. I did a response to your book chat here:
