SPIES & PREJUDICE by Talia Vance | Video Review

So many people expressed interest in Talia Vance's Spies and Prejudice when I put it up for vote in one of my Stack of Five videos. And with a concept like a P&P/Veronica Mars-ish mash-up, who can blame them? So I'm definitely glad to finally be able to share my thoughts with you. Click through for another Austen in August vlog, and make sure to check back tomorrow for a giveaway of S&P, and later in the event for a guest blog from Talia!

Fields’ Rule #1: Don’t fall for the enemy.

Berry Fields is not looking for a boyfriend. She’s busy trailing cheaters and liars in her job as a private investigator, collecting evidence of the affairs she’s sure all men commit. And thanks to a pepper spray incident during an eighth grade game of spin the bottle, the guys at her school are not exactly lining up to date her, either.

So when arrogant—and gorgeous—Tanner Halston rolls into town and calls her “nothing amazing,” it’s no loss for Berry. She’ll forget him in no time. She’s more concerned with the questions surfacing about her mother’s death.

But why does Tanner seem to pop up everywhere in her investigation, always getting in her way? Is he trying to stop her from discovering the truth, or protecting her from an unknown threat? And why can’t Berry remember to hate him when he looks into her eyes?

With a playful nod to Jane Austen, Spies and Prejudice will captivate readers as love and espionage collide.

  1. I hadn't realized it was a mash up of more than just P&P so I'm glad I watched your review. I still think it sounds cute, but now I'll understand more of where its coming from.

    Thanks, Misty!

    1. I think, as long as you know there's *something* else mixed in there, you'll be fine. It's just going in thinking it's straight P&P that can cause some issues.

  3. I also didn't realise it was a mash up (BTW, loved the phrase 'hulk smash'!). I am not familiar with Veronica Mars although I've heard of it, thanks for the tip, as if something is a mash up then you get much more out of it if you're familiar with both. I read a review of something that was a mash up of A Christmas Carol and Pride and Prejudice and the reviewer was criticising something in the story but since I'd read both books I'd recognised it as coming from A Christmas Carol so it had made sense in the context of it being a mash up. Spies and Prejudice is on my wishlist, but I am too stingy to pay full price for it, I'll hold out for a second hand one I think. Thanks for the review!

  4. Ah, I loved Spies and Prejudice! I've never read any Veronica Mars but this actually made me appreciate Pride and Prejudice more than I already did.

    1. Veronica Mars is a tv show, so you wouldn't have read it! Haha. =D

  5. I actually enjoyed the P&P aspect of Spies and Prejudice. I thought it was done really well and I recognized the characters for who they were, at least Darcy, Bingley, Lizzie and Jane. But having only watched one or two Veronica Mars shows, I didn't get that part and it fell way off the believable chart for me. Then there was Berry,I had a love/hate relationship with her and the pacing was uneven. And the ending? What? Where were the questions? Where was the righteous rebellion? The demand for answers? It was so un-Berry like. And unbelievable. Love the author, the book not so much.
