Once Upon a Recipe, #1 — guest post from Beth @ Printcess!

Today's first post comes from Beth over at Printcess (whom you may remember from last year, when I reviewed her fabtastic literary & fairy tale-themed makeup line! Seriously, guys: You need Riddle, Happily Ever After, Peasant... and oh, probably the whole damn line in your life). The ever-creative Beth had a whole laundry list of amazing ideas to share with you guys this year, but the one I absolutely jumped at was the idea of fairy tale suitable recipes. I've been wanting to do something similar on the blog for ages, but these things always somehow sneak up on me. (I don't know how, exactly -- I set the dates...) So of course, I was thrilled when Beth suggested almost exactly what I'd been wanting to do!
Check it out below, and keep an eye out for another of these Once Upon a Recipe posts from Beth, this time on A Backwards Story, later in FTF. But while you're waiting for that, you can always check out fairy tales + perfect shoes post from last year!
(This post is another pic-heavy one, so once again, it is behind a jump break. Click through to get the recipes!)

Fairytales are visceral things. It isn't just the reflection of a culture's (and era's) morality, or a dark warning on the perils of acting outside your station in life. It's also a yearning of the starving lower classes- slippers gleam, cloaks protect warmly, and (best of all) rich foods delight, enchant, and sometimes kill.

Below are some fairytale-inspired recipes, adapted from other chefs and posted for your consumption. I'm skipping The Robber Bridegroom (mmmm...salted maiden) and The Juniper Tree (little boy stew!) because I'm not big into cannibalism.

Bearlicious Porridge
(Adapted from The Paleo Mom)
Ingredients:

1/4 cup flaked dry creamed coconut

1/4 cup Earth Balance Coconut & Peanut Spread (or peanut butter)

1 Tblsp flaxseed meal

1/4 to 1/2 cup water

Honey, to taste

Optional: 2 Tblsp pumpkin seeds as topping

1.) Combine flaked coconut, peanut spread, and flaxseed meal in a container.

2.) Bring water to a boil and pour over coconut combination.

3.) Stir until combined into porridge-like consistency (add boiling water, if thinner consistency is desired).

4.) Stir in honey, to taste.

5.) Top with pumpkin seeds.

Snow White's Apple Chai Latte
(Adapted from The Grant Life)
Ingredients:

1/8 tsp fennel seed

10 green cardamom pods (or crushed cardamom)

8 whole cloves

1 cinnamon stick

6 cups water

6 bags black tea

1 apple, peeled and sliced

1/2 cup milk

Honey, to taste

1.) Combine spices in cheesecloth or a spice ball.

2.) Put water, tea bags, spice bundle, and apple halves in a crockpot.

3.) Cook on low for 8 hours (or high for 4 hours).

4.) Strain out apple bits and tea bags.

5.) Add milk and honey, and stir until combined.

6.) Serve while still hot.

Craving more magical munchies?
For Cinderella fans, perhaps some Pumpkin Pasties, perfect for nibbling after a long night at the ball:

Or a very green, crunchy snack for Jack and friends, perfect for a day out climbing beanstalks:

  1. Too fun!

What about Stinging Nettle Soup (for Grimm's "The Six Swans")? http://allrecipes.com/recipe/stinging-nettle-soup/

Or, for "The Singing, Springing Lark", there is this fascinating Dragon Fruit Salsa thing. To fully embrace the story, I might substitute dove for the scallops... :) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/seared-scallops-with-dragon-fruit-salsa-recipe.html

  4. Ooh, I'm hungry and that helped not at all. I am so going to bookmark this page so I can make that chai latte this fall. (A few tweeks - coconut milk instead of cows milk and herbal 'black tea' instead of the real stuff - and it'll be perfect.)
