Victoria Kincaid’s The Unforgettable Mr Darcy 

Dear Misty and readers at The Book Rat,

I am very pleased to participate on Austen in August once more, and this time I am bringing you a really enjoyable book: The Unforgettable Mr Darcy by Victoria Kincaid.

If you do not anything about this book, I will start saying that the first chapter is just shocking. It is so well written that even if your subconscious is telling you “it cannot have happened, it’s just the first chapter of the book”, you will be shocked. You may be asking yourself, why? I will tell you why…
Elizabeth Bennet is dead!! Apart from the Bennet family, poor Mr Darcy, when he gets to Longbourn, after a horrendous proposal, to be told that the woman he loves is dead due to some sabotage in a ship, must be agonising.

Darcy goes to France to revenge Elizabeth’s death but… spoiler… no, not really. I wrote it, it is only the first chapter and it is even written on the blurb: Elizabeth is not dead. He finds her, but she has lost her memory and for some “complications”, she is let to believe that Darcy is her husband. How on Earth does this make sense? It does, trust me. Thanks to this “mistake”, we can read lovely passages but also very torturing ones where Darcy is, as usual, flagellating himself. About this idea, we can read things like:

“Darcy had never blushed more furiously in his life”

or

“It was sheer bliss. And complete agony”

Remember that Darcy and Elizabeth are in France? France, an enemy to the English and they need to escape as soon as possible due to a spy going around and chasing them. Why? Advise: read the book ;)

We could say that this is an adventure book but with two of our favourite characters. Although, for Elizabeth, this is a double adventure/trip: a trip to survive and escape France and also a trip to find herself because:

“For what are we, after all, but the sum of our memories?”

In this case, she does not have any memories at all and it is scary for her and she only knows that Darcy is her connexion to the world. However, how would she react when she recovers her memory and realises the “mistake”? What would she say? What would she do? What would Darcy do?

I hope you like the way her memory comes back… the human mind can be an enigma even with fictional characters!
