Victoria Kincaid’s The Unforgettable Mr Darcy
I am very pleased to participate on Austen in August once more, and this time I am bringing you a really enjoyable book: The Unforgettable Mr Darcy by Victoria Kincaid.
If you do not anything about this book, I will start saying that the first chapter is just shocking. It is so well written that even if your subconscious is telling you “it cannot have happened, it’s just the first chapter of the book”, you will be shocked. You may be asking yourself, why? I will tell you why…
Elizabeth Bennet is dead!! Apart from the Bennet family, poor Mr Darcy, when he gets to Longbourn, after a horrendous proposal, to be told that the woman he loves is dead due to some sabotage in a ship, must be agonising.
Darcy goes to France to revenge Elizabeth’s death but… spoiler… no, not really. I wrote it, it is only the first chapter and it is even written on the blurb: Elizabeth is not dead. He finds her, but she has lost her memory and for some “complications”, she is let to believe that Darcy is her husband. How on Earth does this make sense? It does, trust me. Thanks to this “mistake”, we can read lovely passages but also very torturing ones where Darcy is, as usual, flagellating himself. About this idea, we can read things like:
“Darcy had never blushed more furiously in his life”
or
“It was sheer bliss. And complete agony”
Remember that Darcy and Elizabeth are in France? France, an enemy to the English and they need to escape as soon as possible due to a spy going around and chasing them. Why? Advise: read the book ;)
We could say that this is an adventure book but with two of our favourite characters. Although, for Elizabeth, this is a double adventure/trip: a trip to survive and escape France and also a trip to find herself because:
“For what are we, after all, but the sum of our memories?”
I hope you like the way her memory comes back… the human mind can be an enigma even with fictional characters!

You bring up great questions, ones I would like to know the answer to. I especially would like to know how Elizabeth reacts when she realizes her mistake. I look forward to reading and finding out.
ReplyDeleteMr Darcy is my favorite of all of Jane Austen’s male characters . Slightly aloof but dreamy when you get to know more about him .... and now in this book Darcy in France .... what could be better ! :0) love it !
ReplyDeleteNow, that does sound like a fun and exciting premise. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it, AnaDarcy. :) Loved your review.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to reading this book. The premise is soooo good :) Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteAna, Thank you for that lovely review! I'm so glad you enjoyed the book!
ReplyDeleteIntriguing.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I really, really want to read the scene where it comes back to Elizabeth! The problem is, I can anticipate quite some anger and upset over her world (as she knows it after the memry loss) being turned upside down...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review!
Tis sounds wonderful. I love reading a tortured Darcy. I can't wait to read Lizzy's reaction when she regains her memory.
ReplyDeleteLizzy will have an unexpected reaction? I can't wait to read this book.
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of this book! Love Victoria’s style of writing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway chance! Regency espionage romance is one of my favourite genres, but when it includes D&E... sigh.
ReplyDeleteA great review, AnaDarcy. It makes me want to pick up the book right away to learn more of the story.
