Non-Disney fairytale retelling (less of a word, more of a concept).
Non-contemporary bisexual and homosexual characters.
Cultural sensitivity with alien species.
Historical fiction with kickass females (like historic assassins or ice-cold queens that aren't the villain).
Rogues with a heart of gold or moral compass (of all genders).
Ensemble cast (in all mediums, really).
Women empowering women/sisterhood (literal and figurative).
Dangerous magic/magic that comes with a real cost.
Set in Seattle (at any time period).
Genre-bending or genre-transcending.
Also YES to soft magical realism- I love the way you phrased it. It makes me feel like the world is a better place than I generally think it is. :D And huge to the baking/cooking bits. Like Water for Chocolate is ENTIRELY magical realism. I got but haven't read yet The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, which is all magical realism baking. I'll see if I can remember the ones I've read and loved, to recommend to you.
I need to hear how Kingfisher Club is! It's on my list, too. Oh, and you should read the graphic novel Lackadaisy- anthropomorphic cats in the 1920s set in a speakeasy, illustrated by the amazing Tracy Butler.
Side note- you may enjoy reading The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, and The Expanse series, and you may enjoy watching Farscape (character-driven scifi with alien and/or Western themes). :)
