RELATED: I talked about "Second Chance" books and authors that I almost -- or did -- DNF, but then went back and gave another try, and liked it!
BOOKS MENTIONED:
Emergency Contact
Web of Frost
Ink
Uncharted
Pretty Dead Girls
Shadowshaper
The Boneless Mercies
Love & First Sight
and there were more, but these are the ones I talked about in the video.

There was a book on creativity that I went back to finish. I thought it was starting to be a religious theme disguised as artistic process but it turned out to be good.
ReplyDeleteThis is so well-timed because I just DNFed How to Hang a Witch today. I still struggle with giving myself permission to abandon, but ultimately life is too short and my TBR is too large for books whose characters flipflop (or throw tantrums), plots change for no reason, pacing grinds to a near-halt, or whose deus ex machina moments become excessive.
ReplyDeleteAlso, 100% with you on juvenile writing. It sucks when a story has promise but the final book reads like a second draft, not a final draft.
I also had difficulty with Shadowshaper (I read it, didn't listen), and I felt like the MC was a stranger to me. And the lack of mystery in the magic definitely made me 'meh'.
You completed various good points there. I did a search on the theme and found the majority of folks will consent with your blog. talk to strangers
