Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father—an elusive European warlock—only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
'THE SPLENDOR FALLS by Rosemary Clement-Moore
Can love last beyond the grave?
Sylvie Davis is a ballerina who can’t dance. A broken leg ended her career, but Sylvie’s pain runs deeper. What broke her heart was her father’s death, and what’s breaking her spirit is her mother’s remarriage—a union that’s only driven an even deeper wedge into their already tenuous relationship.
Uprooting her from her Manhattan apartment and shipping her to Alabama is her mother’ s solution for Sylvie’s unhappiness. Her father’s cousin is restoring a family home in a town rich with her family’s history. And that’s where things start to get shady. As it turns out, her family has a lot more history than Sylvie ever knew. More unnerving, though, are the two guys that she can’t stop thinking about. Shawn Maddox, the resident golden boy, seems to be perfect in every way. But Rhys—a handsome, mysterious foreign guest of her cousin’s—has a hold on her that she doesn’t quite understand.
Then she starts seeing things. Sylvie’s lost nearly everything—is she starting to lose her mind as well?

AFTER THE WOODS by Kim Savage
Would you risk your life to save your best friend?
Julia did. When a paroled predator attacked Liv in the woods, Julia fought back and got caught. Liv ran, leaving Julia in the woods for a terrifying 48 hours that she remembers only in flashbacks. One year later, Liv seems bent on self-destruction, starving herself, doing drugs, and hooking up with a violent new boyfriend. A dead girl turns up in those same woods, and Julia's memories resurface alongside clues unearthed by an ambitious reporter that link the girl to Julia's abductor. As the devastating truth becomes clear, Julia realizes that after the woods was just the beginning.

I love this feature so I'm glad you're doing more in 2019. That is a great theme 'funk breakers'. I have a few on my shelves that do that for me. When I want light, I grab a Georgette Heyer or if I want easy, but action packed I have a few urban fantasies like that. I'm curious about your Rosemary Clement Moore recommend. I'll have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteHave a great Christmas, Misty!
If you end up reading anything by her, let me know what you think! I think she's a lot of fun. =)
DeleteAnd I STILL have yet to read GH. I really need to get on that.
Thanks for these! I enjoyed the Hex Hall series, and have been curious about After The Woods since it came out. I agree that the series kind of lost steam and humor as it ended, and the secondary series that followed it didn't quite capture the same vibe.
ReplyDeleteThis actually inspired me to comb through my shelves for some 'quick wins'- books that feel like they ought to be funk-breakers. Fingers crossed! I hadn't considered thrillers as funk breakers, but you're absolutely correct- they do draw you out and can be really engaging. Hrm....
